More artists than you might realize do it right as activist artists; from actors, to painters, musicians, digital animators, dancers, writers and so on and on.
Artists speak their minds and rally for causes of all sorts, whether for George Floyd and BLM, the environment and ecology, or health and peace.
Activist artists like John Lennon protested the Vietnam War–PEACE. Boomtwon Rats frontman, Bob Geldof launched his very effective brand of political activism in the 90s. Bono of U2 also explored new territory as an artist activist raising visibility and awareness for social justice. The list is long for actor activists too like Leonardo DiCaprio and Vanessa Redgrave.
The world might be blind, but artists aren’t …
Here’s the guy who kicked off “Do The Right Thing” in 1989 – SPIKE LEE !
Spike Lee is an artist’s artist and creator everyone looks to. At a social level his work is incredibly complex, but he lays it out in a way that everyone gets on the first beat–he has rimshot intensity like no one else on the tour.
Another artist doing the right thing, but in a different way, actor Mike Meyers jokes that he holds three passports; British, American, and Canadian by divine intervention. Artists like Spike and Mike (sorry:) are perfect for do the right thing lifetime achievement recognition. In the vid below, Mr. I’m Not Worthy is caught off-guard emotionally as he addresses veterans and supporters of the Invictus Games. Mike is understated, and not an activist, but he’s still very effective in raising awareness for a cause close to him and his family that also resonates very deeply with tens of millions around the world.
Artists of all ilk have the power to raise awareness simply because of who we are as creative beings. It’s our thing, and it holds spiritual as well as intellectual weight and economic value.
Creativity makes a difference in how one interprets the world and life.
Divine intervention and karma can’t be explained any more than artistic flow.

Most of the artist activists above are well known celebrities, but some of the soldiers deeper in the trenches are artists on the SUBSTANCE 100 list.
Sub 100 asks, What is the Purpose of Art in the 21st Century?
Good question …

One last kick at the can, and I don’t know if the Powder Blues Band has ever protested anything, but Tom & the Band have been Doing It Right since ’79 …
